Ackworth & District Shops and Traders:
Shopping in and around Ackworth
The Co-op Supermarket adjacent to Ackworth roundabout dominates the
village shopping. Formerly GT Smiths (it's still hard to remember to call it the
Coop instead of "GT's!) it does provide a convenient local source of just about
anything you need. Sharing the large car park is Ackworth Garden Centre with a
good range of plants and seasonal goods such as Christmas Decorations. On
Wakefield Road is a short row of shops including a small Spar and Ackworth main
Post Office. On Barnsley Road, The Card Gallery started life as a corner
shop newsagent/ tobacconist but now has a back room with a surprising array of very unusual
greetings cards. Bell Lane has an Optician, Solicitors, dentist, hairdressers and
small Off
License. Moving down to Low Ackworth, Station Road has another small Spar, a
hair salon and
the legendary Hinnitts Bakery shop.
Further afield...
Pontefract and Castleford are within a short drive, both with their own
particular atmosphere and range of shops.
Pontefract has a decent indoor market, and outdoor markets on Wednesdays and
Saturdays, some big name shops such as Dorothy Perkins, New Look, Woolworths,
Marks and Spencer etc, and two major supermarkets just off the town centre-
Tesco and Morrisons. Going towards Castleford from here brings you to a trading
estate with Wickes DIY, Curry's, Comet etc. Further on at Junction 32 of the M62
is a huge B&Q store plus the "Freeport" complex of discount name shops adjacent
to Xscape.
Castleford offers a substantial indoor shopping area within Carlton Lanes
(famous for being used as a location for "A Touch of Frost") plus an outdoor
market. More about Castleford on the excellent local site run by Councillor Tony
Davis here.
